J.K. Rowling’sHarry Potter, another franchise known for its variety of characters, provides a fun method for fans to categorize and label their favorite characters: the Hogwarts houses of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. The characters ofYellowstoneare full of complex personality traits and skills that can make them difficult to pin into one house, but it is their choices that show who they really are.
John Dutton (Slytherin)
Like most ofYellowstone’s main characters, John Dutton (played bymodern Western icon Kevin Costner) is far from being a clear-cut hero or villain. Many of John’s actions, especially the frequent prioritization of his land and legacy over his children, establish him as more of an anti-hero. But it can be argued that this sort of disposition is required to run and preserve a piece of land that is as wild, coveted, and valuable as the Dutton ranch. Although he possesses qualities from all four houses, John’s stand-out traits as a tough, ambitious leader who is dead set on upholding his legacy — no matter the cost — land him in Slytherin.
Beth Dutton (Gryffindor)
A fan favorite because of her fierce, take-no-prisoners attitude and ability to get things done, Beth Dutton is one of the best examples of a Gryffindor in the extended Dutton clan. The boutique scene in “Enemies by Monday” from season 2 where Beth trashes a shop owner’s display who racially profiled and violated her sister-in-law, Monica, prove that Beth embodies the bravery present in all Gryffindors.
Jamie Dutton (Ravenclaw)
His antagonistic behavior may cause many to place him into Slytherin, but the analytical, competitive, and calculating Jamie Dutton is more Ravenclaw when it comes down to it. He often uses his intellect to go against what the rest of the family believes is best. Jamie is moved by logic rather than emotion or tradition, causing him to come across as cold or callous, a common flaw among Ravenclaws.
Kayce Dutton (Hufflepuff)
Kayce is defined by the choices he makes regarding the two families he owes his loyalities to. Since the start of the series, he has regularly been torn between supporting his father and siblings or Monica, Tate, and their friends & family on the reservation. This conflict is taken to an extreme in the pilot episode when Kayce kills his brother-in-law, Robert, in an effort to save his brother, Lee.

Kayce is also a hard worker, having taken a position as livestock commissioner while also fulfilling his duties on the ranch. He truly cares about people and is excited about the possibility of being able to help more of them as governor, making him a clear Hufflepuff.
Rip Wheeler (Hufflepuff)
Rip Wheeler is another dedicated, hardworking ranch hand who was raised aspart of the Dutton family. John Dutton took him in as a child after Rip killed his own father upon witnessing him murder his mother and brother. Rip is a force to be reckoned with and has expressed extreme loyalty to the Duttons, even killing on their behalf. However, he’s also proven to be a caring and attentive man in his relationship with Beth as well as in his mentoring of newer ranch hands, such as Jimmy. Like all good Hufflepuffs, Rip is dependable, down-to-earth, and a ride-or-die for those he cares about.
Roarke Morris (Slytherin)
Hedge fund supervisor for Market Equities, Roarke Morris (played by Josh Holloway) is yet another threat to the Dutton property. While his final scene might make his placement in the house with a snake as a mascot a little ironic, Roarke’s role as a powerful leader unafraid to get violent to get what he wants makes him an obvious Slytherin. His determination and ruthlessness make him a worthy rival against Beth, but he is motivated by profits and self-gain rather than family or loyalty. Like most of the worst Slytherins, Roarke is power-hungry, arrogant, and cruel.
Teeter (Gryffindor)
Often serving asYellowstone’s comic relief, Teeter is a bold, pink-haired, fun-loving ranch hand. While she only joins the ranchers in season 3, she quickly finds her place among the others while staying true to her unique self. Like a true Gryffindor, Teeter is confident, over-the-top, and unafraid of standing up for herself or others.

The layers to her character come out after she and Colby are attacked by former Dutton ranch hand Wade Morrow. Afterward, Teeter partakes in Wade’s revenge-killing and becomes a branded member of the ranch, a testament to both her strength and courage.
Colby (Hufflepuff)
Ranch hand Colby is one of the more practical and level-headed Dutton employees, but sometimes to the point of being a spoilsport. He’s a hard worker for the most part, as most Hufflepuffs are, except in instances where Teeter succeeds in distracting him from his work. While Colby has had a recurring role onYellowstonesince the beginning, it took until season three for the plot to start fully utilizing him. Hopefully the rest of the fourth season will offer even more information on who he is as a person. Maybe we’ll even see his Hufflepuff traits in action, like his desire for justice and ability to nurture.
Chief Thomas Rainwater (Slytherin)
Another character who embodies characteristics from multiple houses, Chief Thomas Rainwater is a Harvard-educated casino magnate. He values history and tradition, is a master businessman and strategist, and is extremely dedicated to his mission of reclaiming the land of his ancestors. As high chief of the Confederated Tribes of Broken Rock, Thomas has also proven himself capable of leading others, a commonality among Slytherins.
