While all the buzz at the moment is aboutSuicide Squad, the third official film in the DC Extended Universe afterMan of SteelandBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, next year the interconnected universe goes a very different direction with theSuicide Squadfollow-upWonder Woman. Warner Bros. beat Marvel Studios to the punch by being first out of the gate with a female-led superhero movie during this superhero-dominated era, and now some newWonder Womanmovie images have landed online.

MonsterdirectorPatty Jenkinsis at the helm of the pic, which ratcheted up many folks’ most anticipated list once we got a feel forGal Gadot’s take on Wonder Woman inBatman v Superman. But aWonder Womanadaptation of one form or another has been in the works for years, withJoss Whedonfamously scripting a take that never moved forward. Why did it take so long? As Jenkins tellsEWin the magazine’s latest Comic-Con-centric issue, she has some thoughts:

“I think part of the reason Wonder Woman hasn’t happened [until now] is because the right way to do it is as a classic origin story. People were afraid to do it with a woman, and now they are less so.”

Indeed,Wonder Womanis a prequel toBatman v Supermanin that we’ll follow Gadot’s Diana Prince living with her Amazonian warrior kin when an American pilot, played byChris Pine, crashes on their sheltered island paradise and informs Diana of a massive conflict raging in the outside world: World War I. Diana then opts to leaver her home and attempt to put her powers to good use, and we’ll presumably find out why she left all conflicts behind after these events.
