Plenty of conservatives view Ronald Reagan as a modern day saint. They believe he should be on currency and on Mount Rushmore. Anything less than a hagiography about him will be controversial.
Reaganwill likely be controversial, but it has some exciting casting.Varietyreports that Will Ferrell has signed on to play the 40th President of the United States. The Black List script, written byMike Rosolio, “begins at the start of the ex-president’s second term when he falls into dementia and an ambitious intern is tasked with convincing the commander in chief that he is an actor playing the president in a movie.”
This sounds really fun, absurd, and a little dark. But then again, I don’t revere Ronald Reagan, so I love the idea of a reverse-Davewhere the real President thinks he’s playing the role of a President as opposed to a guy who pretends to play the role of the President.
The script has gained so much traction in Hollywood “that a live read was done recently done in March starringLena DunhamandJohn Cho.”
Ferrell is set to produce under his Gary Sanchez banner, and while the project currently lacks a director, it will soon be shopped out to studios who are likely to pick it up. This movie may be a hot potato politically, but not in the sense of anything immediate likeRodham, which some people see as having direct political consequences were to be made during the election season. There will definitely be people who are up in arms aboutReaganwithout ever seeing it, but I hope that this one reaches the big screen.
Of course, with Ferrell’s busy schedule, it’s tough to say when that might happen. He attaches himself to a lot of projects includingaDaddy’s Homesequel, the comedy’sTom’s Dad, and a film set in theworld of competitive Shakespeare Theater Companies. He’ll next be seen inZerovilleandThe House.
