Mortal Kombat 2will look to expand on the foundations set in the first film with Shang Tsung (Chin Han) and his attempt to eliminate some of Earthrealm’s best fighters. The sequel will mean an expansion of the call sheet, with the introduction of several new characters and fighters. Newcomers arriving in the sequel includeKitana (Adeline Rudolph), the Edenian Jade (Tati Gabrielle), sorcererQuan Chi (Damon Herriman), andShao Kahn (Martyn Ford).Karl Urbanwill alsocome onboard as Johnny Cage. Speaking in an interview with ComicBook, Slater details that despite the film’s large cast, they have a story in place which should ensure the sequel’s success. The writer explains:

“It’s a cast of 20 people. It’s very easy for these things to become three-to-four-hour, sprawling epics, so you always have to be judicious in cutting things down and [focused on] what’s the emotional story we are telling, and what isthe story the audience cares about. Then making sure when you get to those moments that matter — the fights, the fatalities, the surprises, the deaths — that they land and they are as satisfying as everyone wants them to be.I think we nailed it.”
Jeremy Slater Believes the Right Cast Has Been Key To the Success of ‘Mortal Konbat’
Besides the new faces, Mortal Kombat 2 will also welcome back some familiar faces from the 2021 film. These characters include Cole Young (Lewis Tan), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Kung Lao (Max Huang) andKano (Josh Lawson). Slater is excited to have been able to add to the original cast. “The actors are phenomenal. It’s so much funnier and bigger than the first movie,” he says. Lin, Tan and Huang are real life martial artists, and Slater goes on to explain that their casting in the 2021 film has made developing the live-action movies easier.
“They are actually world-class martial artists. They are the best of the best and they can also act,” he says. “And they are really nice guys and embody their characters. It freed me up in the sense that I didn’t have to go, ‘This guy can fight, but he can’t act. This guy can act, but he can’t fight.’ It was a group that could do everything."

The arrival of all these new characters mean on thing:the iconic Mortal Kombat Tournament will take placein the coming sequel which have huge consequences for the future of Earthrealm. “They keep score throughout the movie. There’s a visual representation of who is winning…. It’s not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament,” franchiseco-creator Ed Boon revealed previously. “There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes.” The sequel will delve into the supernatural once more, with rivalry between Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), persisting inthe sequel.
