Every year at Sundance, the festival offers up a surprise screening and this year it was writer-directorStephen Merchant’sFighting with My Family. The film is based on the experiences of real-life wrestlerPaige, a.k.a.Saraya-Jade Bevis, and the 2012 documentaryThe Wrestlers: Fighting with My Family. As you’ve probably seen in the well-cut trailer, Paige comes from a family of wrestlers and the film does a great job showcasing where she came from and how hard she worked to land a professional contract with the WWE.Florence Pughplays Paige,Nick Frostplays her father,Lena Headeyher mother,Jack Lowdenher brother,Vince Vaughnher WWE trainer, andDwayne Johnsonnot only produced the film, but also plays himself.
Shortly after seeing the film, I sat down with Vince Vaughn for an extended interview at the Collider studio at the Kia Supper Suite in Park City. He talked about being at Sundance for the first time, how he got involved in the project, what it was like being at WrestleMania, his reaction to the finished film, if Stephen made him audition, why he lovesIron Man, what he’s been asked to do early in a shoot that made him uncomfortable, the status ofDragged Across Concrete, and more.
In addition, he played “Get To Know Your Sundance Attendee” which includes a number of questions like what TV show they’d like to guest-star on, what’s his favorite fantasy or sci-fi movie, what film scared him as a kid, his first movie or TV show crush, if he prefersGame of ThronesorBreaking Bad, what got him interested in the entertainment industry, and a lot of other fun stuff.
