It’s a strange time to be aVin Dieselfan. The fate of the long-announced eleventh Fast & Furious remains uncertain, while there has also been no concrete update about the fourth film inthe Riddick franchise. But the Fast & Furious movies are a staple on the home video charts, and now, Diesel can celebrate the success ofThe Chronicles of Riddickas well. The second installment in the science-fiction action franchise, heavily inspired byGeorge Miller’s Mad Max moviesandFrank Herbert’s Dune books, thefilm opened to poor reviews and underwhelming box office responsein 2004.

According to FlixPatrol,The Chronicles of Riddickwasthe 11th-most-popular title on the domestic iTunes chartson August 19. The list was led byJames Gunn’sSuperman, and also included blockbuster hits such asJurassic World RebirthandThe Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Among the other recent movies that found spots on the iTunes charts wereEddington,Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning,From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,Materialists,Thunderbolts*, andKarate Kid: Legends. Curiously, each of these movies underperformed at the box office.

And so didThe Chronicles of Riddick. Also starringKarl Urban,Judie Dench,Thandiwe Newton, andColm Feore,the movie made $115 million worldwide, against areported budget of $105 million. Despite havingcultivated a loyal fanbasein the last two decades, the movieearned terrible reviews, and is sitting at a “rotten” 29% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus reads, “As an action movie,Riddickoffers some thrills, but as a sequel toPitch Black, it’s a disappointment.” The franchise’s first film,Pitch Black, was released in 2000. The movie made a little more than $50 million worldwide, against a reported budget of $23 million.

A Fourth Riddick Movie is in the Works

In 2013, Diesel reunited with the director of the first two films,David Twohy, for a third installment. TitledRiddick, the movie grossed almost $100 million, against a reported budget of $38 million. It earned superior reviews, and is sitting at a 58% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Last year, Diesel and Twohy began shooting the fourth installment, titledRiddick: Furya.
