Night of the Living Dead

Starting with the zombie flick that revolutionized the genre,George A. Romero’sNight of the Living Deadis a horror film that infused things with a mix of frightful body horror and social commentary. The story follows a small group of people from different racial and economic backgrounds who get stuck in a house together when the dead start rising from the grave. Transporting the ideals of equality learned from working onMister Rogers' Neighborhoodinto this indie thriller, Romero castsDuane Jonesas the lead in defiance of the societal standards of the time that rarely let people of color be in the spotlight as heroic figures. It’s a film that’sas groundbreaking as it is timeless.

Helping Snyder tell his version of the shambling post-apocalypse is a host of talent, includingVing Rhames,Mekhi Phifer, andSarah Polley.

‘Zombie for Sale’ (2019)

Rotten Tomatoes: 89% | IMDb: 6.6/10

Zombie for Sale

Zombie media can be a real bummer, so I’m going to raise your spirits with a triple feature ofzombie comedies…“Zomedies”? First in the line-up isZombie for Sale, a South Korean horror-comedy co-written and directed byLee Min-jae, which has the zaniness ofZombielandand the heart ofWarm Bodies. The story follows a family who finds an escaped experimental zombie in their house, only to discover that its bite makes people younger and revitalized, so they do what anyone would do in that situation…monetize it! Lee brings a genuine reverence for the zombie genre that perfectly translates into uniquely hilarious situations and thoughtful moments throughout.

‘Zombeavers’ (2014)

Rotten Tomatoes: 72% | IMDb: 4.8/10

Zombeavers

The second in our Zomedy (yes, it’s a thing now) triple feature is theB-Movie creature featuredirected by comedianJordan Rubin,Zombeavers. This comedic thriller takes place in a remotecabin in the woodsthat’s — surprise, surprise — next to a lake where a family of beavers were accidentally exposed to toxic waste. As you might imagine, the college students staying there are in for a dam bad time. Rubin delivers a gory rampage that pays homage to the tropes and tenets of the genre in a clever, winking fashion that harkens back to films likeThe Evil DeadandPiranha 3Dthat are endlessly entertaining on movie nights with friends.

‘Cockneys vs. Zombies’ (2012)

Rotten Tomatoes: 76% | IMDb: 5.9/10

Cockneys vs. Zombies

The final entry in our Zomedy triple feature takes us across the pond to theEast End of London, where the humor is dryand the shambler blood is wet.Cockneys vs. Zombieshas a similar flavor toShaun of the Deadbut kicks it up a notch as it finds new nooks and crannies of humor that make it stand out among other indie zombie flicks. A key ingredient is the inclusion of the elderly, who are typically overlooked or the first to go when things go bad. Not in this movie! The story places a group of senior London citizens, led byAlan Fordin a role that he was made for, at the center of the action as their relatives attempt to rescue them from their retirement home. But these old cockneys aren’t going down without a fight.

‘White Zombie’ (1932)

Rotten Tomatoes: 86% | IMDb: 6.2/10

White Zombie

LegendaryDraculaactorBela Lugosileads this classic zombie film based on the observations inWilliam Seabrook’sinfamous book on Haiti. Predating our modern concept of sci-fi-derived zombies, this story takes the original Afro-Haitian voodoo practice of zombification and slaps a white face on it, hence the nameWhite Zombie. Lugosi brings his signature larger-than-life acting to the role of an evil voodoo master living on a plantation run by supernaturally reanimated corpses who uses his powers to help a man trick a woman into marrying him with a magic potion. (I know, icky on many levels, but showcasing the face of evil is the point of the movie.) If you’re able to let your mind settle into the vibe, you’ll find a fascinating film with all the camp of the classic Universal monster films.

‘Rampant’ (2018)

A perfect cocktail that combines the political intrigue of Korean period dramas likeKingdomand the harrowing character-driven action ofTrain to Busan,Rampantis a film you won’t be able to stop yourself from consuming. There is aShakespearean feelto the story as it follows an exiled prince returning to his land to seize his rightful place on the throne, though old Willy never had Hamlet take on hordes of hungry undead while trying to wrestle control of the kingdom from a power-hungry war minister. This is a movie for folks so steeped in zombie media that they feel like they’ve seen everything, as there are some insanely cool moments that you won’t see in any other flick coming out of these here United States.
