‘The Dropout’ (2022)

Rotten Tomatoes: 90% | IMDb: 7.5/10

The Dropout

Another star-studded ensemble that had the Emmys bleeding nominations,The DropoutstarsAmanda Seyfried(Mank) giving the performance of her career. Inspired by the Stanford dropout-turned-biotech entrepreneur who lied her way to the top of the blood-testing industry,Elizabeth Holmes, the series shows the meteoric rise of Theranos as Holmes builds a billion-dollar company atop a foundation of bad science and deceptionuntil it comes crashing down around her. As Seyfried portrays Holmes, she delivers a fantastic mix of intense ambition, foolhardy confidence, and overwhelmed desperation as she infuses the role with a shot of humanity. And as I mentioned, the cast is filled with brilliant talent likeNaveen Andrews,Laurie Metcalf, andWilliam H. Macy.

Rotten Tomatoes: 78% | IMDb: 7.3/10

Dirty John

Based onChristopher Goffard’spopular true-crime podcast,Dirty Johnis an anthology series that recreates the events of a single case per season. The first season takes the investigative journalism in Goffard’s podcast and dramatizes the case of John “Dirty John” Meehan. The case surrounds Meehan’s relationship with a Los Angeles interior designer and the abuse and manipulations that slowly unfold until things spiral into a fatal encounter.Eric BanaandConnie Brittontake on the roles of the main couple, and they are both excellent together — especially Bana, who manages to beimmensely charming while concealing an undertone of menace. The second season, starringAmanda PeetandChristian Slater, keeps the style and top-tier storytelling but departs from the subjects of the original podcast to focus onthe murder case of Dan and Betty Broderick.

‘Super Pumped’ (2022 - Present)

Rotten Tomatoes: 68% | IMDb: 7.3/10

Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber

Another anthology drama focusing on a single topic each season,Super Pumpeddives into the schemers behind big companies, the first season exploring the origins of Uber andthe upcoming season set to center on Facebook. This series falls into the genre that I’ve previously dubbed “Corporate Biopics,” with the likes ofBlackBerryandUnfrostedthat dramatize theorigin story of a company by giving it a provocative narrative.Joseph Gordon-Levittlends his talents to serve as the face of the rideshare’s former CEO,Travis Kalanick, who helped found the company that upended the taxi industry before he was booted from his own company. Gordon-Levitt’s performance elevates this classic tale of greed, disruption, and betrayal.

‘The Thing About Pam’ (2022)

Rotten Tomatoes: 46% | IMDb: 7.2/10

The Thing About Pam

A rare true-crime comedy,The Thing About Pamtakes the real events of the murder ofBetsy Fariaand fashions them into a darkly quirky story about her friend Pam’s involvement in her death. Breathing life into the titular Pam isRenée Zellweger, who jauntily struts her way through this tangled web of lies and evidence tampering. The series has been compared to theCoen Brothers’crime comedyFargo, and that feels like the most accurate tonal comparison, as the show balances the serious themes of death with the farcical (and often unpredictable) behavior that people can exhibit when trying to get away with murder.

‘The Catch’ (2016 - 2017)

Rotten Tomatoes: 74% | IMDb: 7.1/10

The secondShonda Rhimesseries on the list,The Catchhas bigThe Thomas Crown Affairvibes mixed in with the steamy sensuality you would expect from a Shondaland production. The story followsMireille Enosas a private investigator who is searching for a notorious conman and thief who turns out to be her fiancé, played byPeter Krause— a fact she learns after he takes everything she owns. The show is a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse that revels in spycraft while staying grounded in the emotional connection between the scorned lover and the con artist who used her to stay ahead of the investigation. The episodes are a nice mix of procedural cases that intertwine with the overarching mystery of the conman’s identity, which facilitates an engaging pace for the story.

‘White Collar’ (2009 - 2014)

Rotten Tomatoes: 96% | IMDb: 8.2/10

White Collar

Saving the best for last,White Collaris one of the top “bad guy uses evil for good” series out there, tied with the likes ofLeverageand the rebootLeverage: Redemption. It also helps that no real people were hurt or scammed in order for this procedural dramedy to exist. The show follows the uneasy alliance between an FBI agent who specializes in white-collar crimes, played byTim DeKay, and a charismatic con artist, played byMatt Bomer, who lends his expertise in forgery, art theft, and other assorted cons in exchange for not going to prison. The series was made during theUSA Network“Characters Welcome” era, and boy, does it have great characters! The procedural aspect is very much secondary to the friendship of mutual respect that slowly develops between the two leads — and the heartache when betrayal inevitably tears them apart.
