David Ayer’s highly anticipatedSuicide Squadmovie seems to contain plenty of fascinating elements, fromJared Leto’sHamlet-esque Jokerand his unique look, to the movie’s twisted sense of humor. That question of humor, though, has led to some suggestions that the movie’sextensive reshootsare designed include more of that humor that intrigued audiences in early footage, especially as a response to the box office woes of the somberBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Recently,Jai Courtney, who plays Captain Boomerang in the upcoming movie,addressed the reshoot issuesaying that the movie is now including “some additional action stuff that we’ve been doing, which is pretty dope. Really we’re just kind of adding in that sense.”
Christina Radish recently spoke to Courtney about the upcoming documentaryBe Here Now: The Andy Whitfield Story(which is now in theaters in NYC, and Los Angeles on April 15th), but he also talked a little bit aboutSuicide Squad. We’ll be bringing you Here Nowsoon, but wanted to highlight some of Courtney’s comments about his other upcoming film as well.
Courtney’sSuicide Squadco-starCommonrecently commented that the production isunlike any other comic book movieout there, which is why he was attracted to it. When Courtney was asked what surprised him the most about the shoot, he said,
“What was most surprising was the camaraderie on set. It’s easy to imagine, on a film of that scale with a cast of that scale, you wouldn’t find the family that we did in each other. That was really awesome. You can’t predict those things. You can’t fashion it out of something else. Sometimes it works great, others not. It really was a familial experience for all of us, which was really cool, man.”
Even with Jared Leto sendingMargot Robbiea rat as a gift? Not my style personally, but maybe it’s the kind of thing that brings people together. As far as what audiences may love about the film, Courtney said:
“The boundaries we’re pushing within that genre. It’s so hard to talk about without saying anything, and as you know, I can’t say anything. I think people can see from the material that is out there that there is something new and exciting that they haven’t seen within this realm thatSuicide Squadwill offer. We’re all just pumped to share that with the world.”
But most intriguingly, when asked if could use one word to describe director David Ayer, he said:
“Psychotic. He is the man. He’s one of the greats. I think he has an amazing future ahead of him, and I hope we get to work together again. I have nothing but admiration for him, and small amounts of fear. That about sums it up. He loves that attention to detail, and he’s not interested in comfort. Nothing is about making anything easy for anyone. And that’s not about making it hard, it’s just that when you’re off center, it creates a space for wonderful things to happen. That’s the world he likes to play in, and I think that’s very exciting.”
Now, actors are actors, and no one is ever going to badmouth a blockbuster they’re in (at least, they won’t if they’re wise), but there’s something genuine about the enthusiasm shared by theSuicide Squadcast, especially when it comes to talking about how weird and creative things have been with Ayer’s approach. It’s definitely going to be interesting to find out eventually what the reshoots were really all about and how they changed the final product, but we’ll have to wait awhile for that. The movie itself is just around the corner, though, as it’s set to hit theatersAugust 5th.
