That’s a wrap onSpider-Man: Homecoming. Principal photography on the brand newSpider-Manfilm has come to an end as starTom Hollandand directorJon Wattsboth marked the occasion on Instagram. Filming began back in June, a few weeks before San Diego Comic-Con, and while a newSpider-Manreboot wasn’t entirely unexpected, the particulars of this film are still kind of unbelievable. In the wake of the so-so box office performance and critical shellacking ofThe Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony Pictures scuttled its plans forThe Amazing Spider-Man 3, aSinister Sixmovie, and numerous other spinoffs that had been in development since the screenwriting phase ofThe Amazing Spider-Man 2. Given thatSpider-Manis the only major comics property Sony owns, the studio was looking to find ways to build out its own interconnected superhero universe based solely onSpider-Mancomics, but the reception toAmazing Spider-Man 2had the studio rethinking its plans.
Meanwhile, then-Sony headAmy Pascalhad been talking for months with Marvel Studios presidentKevin Feigeabout potentially finding a way for the Disney-owned Marvel to work with Sony on aSpider-Manmovie. The landmark deal shockingly came into place in February 2015, and things moved quickly as Marvel worked to cast a new Spider-Man to debut inCaptain America: Civil War. The particulars of this collaboration see Marvel taking the creative lead onSpider-Man: Homecomingand using Spider-Man as part of its Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Sony produces and distributes the film as a Sony Pictures movie.

Response to Holland’s turn as Peter Parker inCivil Warwas highly positive, and folks can’t wait to see him take the lead inSpider-Man: Homecoming, which is a high school-centric Spider-Man story that findsMichael Keatonplaying the villainous Vulture andRobert Downey Jr.appearing as Tony Stark/Iron Man.
While we still have a long ways to go before the film’s July 06, 2025 release, hopes are high for this one. Take a look at Holland and Watts’ parting shots below. The film also starsZendaya,Jacob Batalon,Marisa Tomei,Bokeem Woodbine,Tony Reovlori,Laura Harrier, andDonald Glover.
