After two landmark weeks at the pinnacle of the box office pyramid, directorRyan Coogler’sSinnersconceded the top spot to Marvel’sThunderbolts*. That being said, it continued to draw huge crowds on the back of excellent reviews and positive word of mouth. Having completed two full weeks in theaters worldwide,Sinnerspassed the $200 million milestone this weekend. It’s all but guaranteed to overtake every film directed byJordan Peele, as itaims for a final global box office haul of over $400 million. If these projections turn out to be accurate, it would makeSinnersone of the biggest original blockbusters ever.
It’s already among the highest-grossing horror movies in box office history. With $180 million domestically and another $57 million from overseas markets,Sinnershas grossed a combinedglobal box office haul of $236 million so far. This puts it ahead of the beloved hitSmile, which grossed $217 million globally on the back of incredible word of mouth.Sinnershas also overtakenThe Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do ItandAnnabelle Comes Home. Produced ona reported budget of $90 million,Sinnersis nowamong the 30 highest-grossing horror movies of all time; the list is led byIt, which made $700 million worldwide in 2017.It: Chapter Twogrossed over $465 million worldwide a couple of years later. WhileSinnerswill probably not pose a challenge to the first film, it could come close to the lifetime global haul of the sequel.

But it’s all up in the air, currently.Sinnershas been defying horror movie trends and exceeding expectations since the day it debuted, which makes its trajectory difficult to forecast. The movie made $48 million in its opening weekend domestically, and registered a record hold of -5% the following weekend, when it grossed $45 million. The vampire movie, which reunites Coogler with his frequent collaborator, starMichael B. Jordan, opened toexcellent reviews. It appears to have settled at a “certified fresh” 98%Rotten Tomatoes score, which has only been bolstered by a “verified hot” 97% audience rating.
Coogler Is the Latest Member of the Hollywood A-List
Sinnersis set in rural Mississippi in the 1930s, and follows a set of twins as they put together a grand party for their community. The evening is disrupted by an uninvited coven of white vampires, unleashing all sorts of mayhem.Sinnershas beenpraised for itslarge-format cinematography— themovie is returning to IMAX 70 mm locationson popular demand — in addition toLudwig Göransson’s blues-inspired score, and the thematic depth of Coogler’s script. It sets him up as the rare Hollywood filmmaker who can command a high degree of creative freedom for original ideas, alongside the likes ofChristopher Nolan,Quentin Tarantino, and Peele.
