When it comes to fandoms, there was once few stronger than that ofSherlock. The BBC series helmed by the duo ofMark GatissandSteven Moffat, which sawBenedict Cumberbatchstaras a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, was once one of the most popular shows in the world, thanks to a mixture of intelligent writing, star-making performances, and high-tech camera work, at least for an early 2010s BBC budget.
Despite the show ending in disarray eight years ago, with many seeing the final season as a frustrating disservice to thegenius that came before it,Sherlockis still a major part of millions of lives and is a consistent talking point in online forums. One question that is always posed in such discussions refers towhich episode ofSherlockis the best, with many often disagreeing with a range of answers. OnIMDb, the highest-rated episode remains Season 2, Episode 3, “The Reichenbach Fall,” which boasts a near-perfect 9.6/10 and is one of the highest-rated episodes of any British show on the platform.

However, this is not the favorite of the series' co-creator, Gatiss, who recently toldRadio Timesin an exclusive interview exactly which episode is the “best.” After discussing the way in which the pair adapted the original works ofSir Arthur Conan Doyle, Gatiss remarked, “The best episode, which is definitely A Scandal in Belgravia, which is fantastic, I think is a sort of an explosion of that little story, and yet it has all the beats.” He then added, “You know, Sherlock still disguises himself as a clergyman, he has to create an emergency in the house, Irene Adler beats him - literally - things like that.” There is no doubt just how impressive an episode “Scandal in Belgravia” is, with Gatiss’s confirmation acting as clarification for the many fans who had long called it so.
Will ‘Sherlock’ Ever Return?
There have been many rumors ever since the show ended in 2017 thatSherlockis destined to return. Despite the brilliant cast and crew involved finding themselves deep in other projects, that won’t stop die-hardSherlockfans from praying for the improbable. Alas, in a recent interview with Collider’sTherese Lacson, Gatiss put those rumors to bed, saying, “No. We had our go, and we struck gold with Benedict and Martin. I mean, there’s no…what would be the point? You’d just be doing it again. And to be frank, you know, I’m 60 next year. It’s incredible.” He continued, “And how many more things can one do? I’m committed to doing this, andI’m very interested in doing new stuff, andBookishis what I want to do.So I think it’s great to, as I said yesterday, it’s great to tip your hat to what a wonderful thing it was, but also it’s lovely to move forward.”
