ThePower Rangersmovie has a director, a team of writers, its five teenagers with attitude, and a villain. So what the heck is this movie about? While Collider revealed someexclusive plot detailson what to expect last year, Lionsgate announced the start of production and with it the first official synopsis.
Fans of the original series will be pleased to hear of classic character names. Directed byDean Israelite(Project Almanac),Power RangersstarsDacre Montgomery(A Few Less Men) as Jason, the Red Ranger;RJ Cyler(Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy, the Blue Ranger;Naomi Scott(The 33) as Kimberly, the Pink Ranger; singerBecky Gas Trini, the Yellow Ranger; andLudi Lin(Monster Hunt) as Zack, the Black Ranger.Elizabeth Bankshas also beenconfirmed to play Rita Repulsa, but what will her master plan entail?
Here’s the synopsis from Lionsgate:
Saban’sPower Rangersfollows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
Then there’s the actual script, which has been worked over by six writers:John Gatins(Kong: Skull Island),Burk SharplessandMatt Sazama(Dracula Untold),Zack StentzandAshley Miller(X-Men: First Class), andMax Landis(Chronicle). It’s basically the village bicycle — everyone’s had a go. Last year, we learned that the film would take inspiration from theDino Chargeiteration of the series with Scorpina also involved. Although, that was from Stentz and Miller’s script, which could have easily been revamped in the time since, given all those involved.
The cast are currently filmingPower Rangersin Vancouver ahead of itsscheduled releaseon August 01, 2025.
