Sony Pictures has unveiled a new trailer and a few clips from the upcoming sci-fi filmPassengers. Directed by Oscar-nominatedThe Imitation GamehelmerMorten Tyldum, the film is a rarity in Hollywood: a bona fide 100% original sci-fi story.PrometheusscribeJon Spaihtspenned the script years ago, and after a few different permutations, the movie finally came together withJennifer LawrenceandChris Prattin the lead roles. They play a pair of passengers aboard a spaceship that is traveling towards a new life on a new planet who are suddenly woken up from hypersleep 90 years too early. After roaming around the ship for a bit and presumably making whoopie, they soon realize they may have been woken up for a reason.

This new trailer really plays up theTitanicangle of the story in that it’s a sweeping epic romance about two possibly doomed lovers aboard a giant ship that’s barreling towards a horrific crash. UnlikeTitanic, however, these people are in space, and there ain’t no lifeboats comin’.

This looks like a big, splashy Hollywood blockbuster with smarts and heart, so that’s something to be excited about this holiday season. Moreover, cinematographerRodrigo Prieto—whose credits includeBrokeback Mountain,The Wolf of Wall Street, andArgo—looks to have crafted some absolutely stunning imagery that I can’t wait to see on the big screen.
