At long last, someone has finally gone on record about the inside story of howMission: Impossible – Ghost Protocolmorphed midway through production from a handover movie to a properTom Cruisevehicle. When the project was in development, it was rumored that co-starJeremy Rennerwas being set up to take over the franchise from Cruise, and thatGhost Protocolwould bring Ethan Hunt’s story to some kind of a conclusion. We know thatChristopher McQuarrie—who would go on to write and directRogue Nation,Fallout—came onboard midway through production and performed rewrites, and we know that in the finished film, Jeremy Renner’s Agent Brandt does in no way take over the franchise....

Michael Bay’sTransformers: The Last Knightwill indeed lead the box office this weekend with an estimated $69 million in total. Mind you, that’s over a five-day opening stretch, giving ample time for the franchise’s fanbase to see the movie at least once, if not two times. Just for some contrast, over a three-day opening, the previousTransformersfilm,Age of Extinction, made well over $100 million. Of course, as I discussed yesterday, it’s likely that Bay’s latest take on robots in disguise will be saved, or given a few mattresses to land on at the very least, by the foreign box office, where it has been a far bigger hit than it is here....

Disney’s U.S. parks were set to re-open next Wednesday, but amid the ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic,Disneylandand Disney World are now closed indefinitely. The Walt Disney Co. announced on Friday that the California and Florida parks will remain closed “until further notice” and hourly park employees will continued to be paid until April 18. “While there is still much uncertainty with respect to the impacts of COVID-19, the safety and well-being of our guests and employees remains The Walt Disney Company’s top priority,” Disney said in a statement....

There’s something to be said for exciting superhero popcorn movies, but as the competition becomes more and more sophisticated, visceral, and character-driven, it gets tougher to make a case for films that don’t meet those standards.
