Sony’s recent projects centering around theSpider-ManIP have been… interesting, to say the least. Don’t get us wrong, Sony has delivered a wealth of content that has turned the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man into one of the most popular superheroes of all time. Theoriginal trilogy fromSam Raimi, thetwoAndrew Garfieldfilms, and the current collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios that brought Spidey into theMarvel Cinematic Universeare beloved by fans everywhere. That being said, Sony’s recent solo attempts haven’t been as warmly received, with thetwoVenomfilmsandMorbiusfailing to pick up speed for their planned “villainverse”. Just when it seemed that Marvel Studios may be the better choice to take the reins of the franchise, Sony threw a curveball withSpider-Man: Into the Spider-VerseandSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The Oscar-winning hits fromThe LEGO MoviecreatorsPhil LordandChris Millerwere Spidey’s first animated feature films and took fans of the web-head on a hysterically funny, surprisingly emotional, and beautifully animated thrill ride that stands proudly next toSpider-Man 2andSpider-Man: No Way Homeas contenders for the best Spider-Man film ever made.
Into the Spider-Verseintroduced quite a few variants of Spidey from various other dimensions, and one of the standouts was easilySpider-Man Noir. Voiced by the greatNicolas Cage, this alternate version of Peter Parker comes from a dimension that’s set in the 1930s, where this darker and grittier version of Spider-Man is a tough-as-nails detective. Often seen with a mysterious trench coat and a lethal revolver, this version of Spider-Man finds himself fighting crime at a time when the Great Depression is sweeping the United States and World War II is engulfing the globe.

It’s a fascinating and original take on a beloved character, and his appearance inInto the Spider-Verselaunched him from a cult classic into a fan favorite. Perhaps seeing how much potential a story centering on this rough and gruff detective Spidey has, Lord and Miller have begun development on aSpider-Man Noirlive-action series, now simply titledNoir. This marks Sony’s first-ever live-action series to star Spider-Man, along with the upcomingSilkseries. To learn more about the crew, comic origins, and streaming home of the ambitious new series, here is everything we know so far aboutNoir.

The Oscar-winning actor, whose iconic roles are almost too many to count, is also set to star in the recently released critically acclaimed thrillerLonglegesand the upcoming bilbical horror filmThe Carpenter’s Son.
Sony PresidentKatherine Popespoke on Cage taking on the role, saying:
We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character.
Now that it has a beloved star returning to a fan-favorite role,Noiris starting to round out the rest of its cast of Marvel characters. First up on the list isNew GirlstarLamorne Morris, who will be playing Joseph “Robbie” Robertson- a frequent ally of Peter Parker who is typically the photographer’s co-worker and/or editor at the Daily Bugle newspaper. The last time we saw a variant of Robbie Robertson was in theSam Raimi-directed trilogy ofSpider-Manfilms, where the late greatBill Nunnplayed the lovable character to perfection. In the Spider-Man Noir comics, the version of Robbie we meet is aa bit different, with him being a dedicated reporter for an independent newspaper that exposes racism and prejudice in World War II-era America. Other notable roles of Lamorne Morris include Deputy Witt Farr inFargoand Kevin inGame Night. Plus, Lamorne Morris is set to portrayGarrett Morrisinthe star-studdedSNL 1975.

Shortly after Lamorne Morris was cast inNoir, another big name joined the ambitiousSpider-Manshow, but we don’t currently know who he’s going to be playing. Perhaps best-known for his work as Mad-Eye Moody in theHarry Potterfranchise,Brendan Gleesonhas joined the cast ofNoiras the mainantagonist of the upcoming Spidey series. Gleeson is also well-known for his roles as Father James inCalvary, Ken inIn Burges, and he received an Oscar nomination for his part as Colm Doherty inThe Banshees of Inisherin. Gleeson will also be making an appearance in another upcoming comic book adaptation,Joker: Folie à Deux.Jack Hustonis the latest to join the series, also in an unknown role.
4What Are the Comic Origins of Spider-Man Noir?
The version of Peter B. Parker that would become Spider-Man Noir resides in Earth-90214, a world that’s currently locked in the 1930s. As you might expect, Parker is bitten by a unique kind of spider, though instead of a radioactive science experiment, it’s connected to an all-powerful Spider God. That’s not the only major difference, as this variant of Peter Parker is not the light-hearted quip machine that we all know and love. This Spidey’s personality is more akin to that of Batman andThe Punisher, with his iconic motto of “with great power comes great responsibility” replaced by “if there is too much power, then it is the responsibility of the people to take it away”. Spider-Man Noir’s dedication to striking fear into the hearts of New York’s criminals leads him to conduct most of his activities at night and by himself. Plus, Spider-Man Noir also has no problem taking the lives of criminals, even going as far as to use his own revolvers.
The reason for this more pessimistic Spider-Man is likely the far darker death of Uncle Ben. In this universe, Ben was killed by Adrian Toomes, most well-known asthe Vulture. Rather than a high-flying scavenger, this Toomes is a brutal serial killer and cannibal, and he took part in his vices when he devoured Ben’s corpse. Toomes is certainly a fundamentally evil force, but he’s only a lackey of the true threat to New York - the nefarious mob boss known asThe Goblin. Uncle Ben’s death is what inspires Peter to go full-blown detective vigilante, taking on cases to track down the mystery of who The Goblin and his Enforcers are and how he can stop them. Spider-Man Noir succeeded in taking down The Goblin and his empire. His later adventures included tangles with Doctor Otto Octavius, going toe to toe with the Nazi Party, and even venturing into the Spider-Verse and meeting alternate versions of himself.

3Who Is Making Spider-Man Noir?
Phil Lord and Chris Miller produced the now belovedSpider-Man Into the Spider-Verse, and it’s just another notch in their impressive resume that includesCloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,The LEGO Movie, and the21 Jump Streetfilms. The show’s writer isOren Uziel, who previously worked with Lord and Miller on22 Jump Street(2014), and Uziel will also co-showrunning withThe PunisherproducerSteve Lightfoot. The first two-episodes ofNoirwill be directed and produced by Emmy-winnerHarry Bradbeer(Fleabag).
2What Other ‘Spider-Man’ Projects Are in Development?
Being one of the crowning jewels in Marvel and Sony’s crowns, there is certainly no shortage of additionalSpider-Manrelated stories that are on the horizon. Later this year, we’ll be getting not one, but two entries into Sony’s contentious Villainverse, including the R-ratedKraven the Hunterand the trilogy-concludingVenom: The Last Dance. Spidey also does have a future in television apart fromNoir. WhilePrime Video’s other spin-off,Silk: Spider Society, has reportedly been canceled, Disney+ is working on their own new series withYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man- the MCU-inspired series that will see Peter Parker find an unlikely mentor in Norman Osborn rather than Tony Stark. It’s also no secret that another film withTom Holland’s MCU Spidey will more than likely be hitting screens sooner rather than later. Finally, the third and final chapter of theSpider-Versetrilogy,Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is also in the works, and is all but confirmed to bring back Nicolas Cage as his detective version of Spidey.
