It’s stillon course to hit the coveted $1 billion milestone, but things are getting tight now, with more competition in its path.Lilo & Stitchwould want to avoid stalling like Warner Bros.‘A Minecraft Moviedid some weeks ago. Also poised to pass the $1 billion milestone, the blockbuster ended its run with around $950 million in the bank.Lilo & Stitchhas now overtakenA Minecraft Movieat the international box office, while passing another W.B. hit domestically.

With $386 million at the domestic box office,Lilo & Stitchhas surpassed the $382 million lifetime domestic haul ofHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, the massively successful eighth and final installment ofthe hit franchise.Deathly Hallows 2remains the series’ top-grossing film, andthe only Harry Potter movie to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide. It ultimately ended up grossing $1.3 billion globally, pushing the franchise’s cumulative earnings past the $7 billion milestone.Deathly Hallows 2was a critical hit as well; itholds a franchise-best 96%Rotten Tomatoes score.

Thebest-selling books are set to be adapted intoan HBO seriessoon, with casting for all the major roles having already been announced.Lilo & Stitchitself is a remake of the hit 2002 animated original that made around $280 million worldwide. Incidentally, both the original cartoon and the Harry Potter franchise were massively popular among the millennials. The live-action remake has been directed byDean Fleischer Camp, who broke out with the acclaimed A24 movieMarcel the Shell with Shoes On. It holds a “fresh” 71%Rotten Tomatoes score, and an even better 93% audience score on the aggregator website.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Is a Giant-Killer
