Harrison Fordhas just added another achievement to his lengthy resume. He’s just been nominated for his first-ever Emmy Award, earning the nod for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance as Dr. Paul Rhoads in the second season of the Apple TV+ comedyShrinking. This is Ford’s second major award nomination; he was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for the 1985 thrillerWitness.
The 83-year-old Ford is the second-oldest nominee in category history, after a then-86Alan Arkinwas nominated forThe Kominsky Methodin 2020; Arkin lost toDan Levy, ofSchitt’s Creek. Ford is up against an impressive roster of stars in the category:Shrinkingco-starMichael Urie,Saturday Night Live’sBowen Yang,The Bear’sEbon Moss-Bachrach,The Studio’sIke Barinholtz,The Four Seasons’Colman Domingo, andSomebody Somewhere’sJeff Hiller. What Is ‘Shrinking’ About?
Shrinkingstars Segel as Jimmy Laird, a therapist who was recently widowed when his wife was killed by a drunk driver. Unable to fully process his own grief, he starts intervening in his patients' lives in hilarious-but-unethical ways. He’s also trying to mend his relationship with his teenage daughter (Lukita Maxwell), and is carrying on an affair with his coworker Gaby (Williams). Meanwhile, his colleague Paul (Ford) is dealing with his own personal crisis, in the form of Parkinson’s disease. Jimmy’s life gets even more complicated in the second season, when Louis (Brett Goldstein), the drunk driver who killed his wife, comes into his life seeking amends. The series was created by Segel, Goldstein (Ted Lasso), andBill Lawrence(Scrubs).
WhileShrinkinghad a respectable haul of nominations on Tuesday, the big winner so far is fellow Apple TV+ comedyThe Studio, proving that Hollywood loves having some fun poked at itself. The showbiz satire picked up the most-ever nominations for a rookie comedy series, beatingTed Lasso’s record; it hauled in 23 nominations, including four for star, writer, producer, and directorSeth Rogen.
