What Is ‘Halloweentown’?

TheHalloweentownfranchiseconsisted of four movies, beginning in 1998 withHalloweentown. Three sequels would be made, two of which would see the return of Brown as Marnie Cromwell. In the first film, Marnie, on the precipe of her 13th Halloween, discovers she’s a witch, her mother was a witch, and her grandmother was a witch. Her grandmother, Aggie Cromwell (Debbie Reynolds), seeks out help after a darkness plagues Halloweentown, where all Halloween-related creatures reside. When Marnie’s mom Gwen (Judith Hoag) rejects Aggie’s plea for help, Marnie takes it upon herself to be the extra Cromwell witch Aggie needs in order to defeat the dark forces at play.

The three sequels continued to expand the world ofHalloweentown, breaking and bending rules that had been in place since before the events of the first movie. Originally, those from Halloweentown could only travel to the mortal world (and vice versa) on Halloween. In the sequel, which features Kountz as the antagonist, Kal, Marnie and her friends find a way to open the portal at will. As the mortal and magical begin to mix in further movies, they teach lessons in tolerance and equality while also delivering feel-good family moments, including a special bond between Marnie and Aggie as Marnie’s powers as a witch develop.
