Eddingtonwas one of the many films to have its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and fans have been curious for years to see just howAri Aster’s new film stacks up to his most recent outing. Enoughearly reviews forEddingtonhave come in that it’s been given a 66% score from critics onRotten Tomatoes. This is more than double that of starJoaquin Phoenix’s last film,Joker: Folie à Deux, which landed at equally embarrassing scores of 31% from both critics and audiences on the aggregate site. In addition to Phoenix,Eddingtonalso starsPedro Pascal(The Last of Us),Luke Grimes(Yellowstone),Emma Stone(Poor Things), andAustin Butler(Dune: Part Two). The film is coming to theaters on July 18.
Eddingtonis set in May 2020, and it follows a standoff between a small-town sheriff and the mayor of Eddington, New Mexico, that sparks a conflict that pits neighbors and friends against each other. The first trailer forEddingtonwas released back in April, and to the surprise of many, it mostly featured footage of characters being streamed or recorded from a phone — an extremely unorthodox filming method compared to traditional westerns. Aster worked on a series of shorts before making his directorial debut in 2018 onHereditary, the horror film led byToni Collette, who was snubbed for an Oscar for her performance. One year afterHereditary, Aster teamed up withFlorence PughforMidsommar, another horror film that many felt she was also snubbed for an Academy Award. There was a four-year gap betweenMidsommarandBeau is Afraid(the previous collaboration between Aster and Phoenix), which was cut in half by the two-year gap betweenBeau is AfraidandEddington.
