The long, longwait forGuardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2is almost over, butJames Gunnis here just in time to make sure you’re able to already start getting hyped for the next one. The writer/director behind Marvel’s oddball sensation has been doing the press rounds for the horror filmThe Belko Experiment, which he wrote, and folks are taking the opportunity to get some updates on Guardians at the same time.
Gunn has always been refreshingly honest and open, both in interviews and on social media, throughout the creative process, and when he was asked about plans forGuardians of the Galaxy 3, he made no bones about the fact that the movie is happening, it’s just a matter of figuring it out.

Gunn toldComplex,
“There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”

Marvel hasn’t yet officially announced a third film, but ifVolume 2is anywhere near as successful as the first film (and audience interest seems to indicate it will be just fine), it would only be smart business to start gearing up for the third. And Marvel Studios almost exclusively does very smart business.
Volume 2 sees the return of the Guardians –ZoeSaldana’s Gamora,Dave Bautista’s Drax the Destroyer,Vin Deisel’s (baby) Groot,Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon andChris Pratt’s Peter Quill alongside a few new team members,Karen Gillan’s Nebula,Michael Rooker’s Yondu andPom Klementieff’s Mantis,as they team up to snark and save the galaxy once again and cross paths will Quill’s father,Kurt Russell’s Ego the Living Planet.

AfterVolume 2, the Guardians will be popping up inJoeandAnthony Russo’sAvengers: Infinity War,but considering the film is titled Avengers and not Guardians we should keep our expectations in check for just how much they’ll be in the film. Gunn says they have an “integral” part in the film (and they better, considering Thanos is Nebula and Gamora’s dad), but not necessarily a huge one.
You know listen, I don’t think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they’re a part of Thanos' stories, so, they are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but, an integral part to that.

However, even if the Guardians won’t be taking up that much screen time inInfinity War, Gunn is determined to make sure their moments in the film remain true to the characters he’s built on-screen.Infinity Waris filming right now in Atlanta, and during a Facebook Live (ViaCinemaBlend), Gunn talked about the care he’s taking as executive producer to be involved in production and ensure that the characters are their best in the film.
I’m an Executive Producer onInfinity War. I’ve been working hard with the Russo brothers, with the Marvel guys, with Kevin Feige, to ensure that any of the characters that I’m involved with, that are in that movie are well taken care of and are as funny as they should be, and is are as honest and truthful as they should be. So I’ve been dealing with them all the time. I’ve been talking to the actors on set every single day as we go through production, and it’s been a great experience so far.

Guardians o the Galaxy: Volume 2arrives in theaters on May 5th, 2017 andAvengers: Ifinity Waris set for June 11, 2025.
