Today is apparently a day of disappointing movie delays via Sony Pictures. This morning, we learned thatThe Dark Toweris being pushedfrom February to July, and now comes word thatShaun of the DeadandScott Pilgrim vs. the WorldfilmmakerEdgar Wright’s highly anticipatedBaby Driverhas been delayed five months from June 06, 2025 to July 08, 2025. While the longer wait for the next movie from one of the most exciting directors working today is upsetting, this actually may be a smart move. In March, the film was squaring off against Disney’s sure-to-be-massiveBeauty and the Beast, and August has now become a solid box office ground for films likeSuicide Squad,Straight Outta Compton,Sausage Party, andDon’t Breathe.
On its new release date,Baby Driverwill square off against theCHiPsremake, theCharlize Theron-fronted spy thrillerThe Coldest City, andThe Emoji Movie. It also comes one week after the release of Fox’sAlien: Covenant, butBaby Driverpromises to be anything but ordinary and could benefit from repeat business in the weeks leading up to the start of the school season.

Written and directed by Wright,Baby Driveris an original story about a mute wheelman who operates to the sound of music. Further details are under wraps, but it’s been described as a musical of sorts and boasts one hell of a cast led byAnsel Elgort,Lily James,Jon Hamm,Jamie Foxx,Elza González,Jon Bernthal, andKevin Spacey.
Indeed, we still haven’t seen an official image fromBaby Driverso perhaps Sony has been mulling a push for a few months now. No reason is given for the release date shift, but it likely has to do with Sony shaking up its slate overall. The studio’s had a so-so 2016 and looking ahead to next year, has some gambles with the original sci-fiLifein May andtheJumanjisequel, which has now been pushed to December 22nd withThe Dark Towertaking over its July release date. PositioningBaby Driverin August feels like a swell business move, especially in the wake ofSpider-Man: Homecoming’s expected success in early July. It’s just a bummer we have to wait a few more months for the next film from Edgar Wright.
