With the weekend numbers in, Disney is still flying high. The Jungle Bookoutperformed expectations, nabbing huge numbers overseas (particularly in China, India, and Russia) to bring its domestic total to almost $200 million and its worldwide total to $528 million.Zootopiaalso remains in one of the top slots at #4 for the weekend, closing in on almost a billion worldwide. As I mentioned yesterday, any movie you can take kids to is going to perform pretty well regardless, but the fact that both films received positive critical reviews as well surely didn’t hurt.
Now for the less successful stories of the weekend; The Huntsman: Winter’s Waris being called a flop, bringing in a paltry $20 million over the weekend, which is just a fraction of its $115 million budget. Poor reviews and some uncertainty over where the story fits into the mythology may have helped to sink it, but once again, it’s disappointing forChris Hemsworth, whose star power doesn’t seem to pull audiences in when he’s not playing Thor.

Barbershop: The Next CutandThe Bosscontinue trucking along in the Top 5 for the weekend, bringing in decent numbers (particularly for Barbershop, which has netted over $36 million so far). But as forRichard Linklater’s latest, which was available in more theaters this week, it looks like not everybody wanted some (how many times will that joke be used this week, over/under?) —Everybody Wants Some!!charted in the Top 20, but only netted $665,000 this week for a total of $2.4 million overall. (Hey, you can’t rush greatness).
As mentioned yesterday, Disney’sZootopiahasn’t caught up toBatman v. Superman: Dawn of Justicedomestically, although it has sailed ahead worldwide with $907 million toBatman v Superman’s $852. And while the DC property pulled in another $8 million overseas this weekend and $5.5 million domestically — just missing the Top 5 — it seems to be slowing down at a rate that could mean it may not make $1 billion globally, but stayed tuned to find out!
