AMC’s hit seriesBreaking Badis universally acknowledged as one of the best TV dramas of all time, so whenVince Gilligansought to do the spin-off/prequelBetter Call Saul, centering on the sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman, it raised quite a few eyebrows. Gilligan and co-creatorPeter Gouldhad the last laugh, however, crafting a masterpiece that is in some ways very different, yet just as satisfying as the parent show. The tale of Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) and his descent from an essentially ok guy who cuts corners to the morally bankrupt Saul Goodman mirrors in many ways the character arc ofBryan Cranston’s Walter White fromBreaking Bad.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the series timeline is how the creators are able to coalesce the characters fromBreaking Badinto theBetter Call Saulstoryline. Every character from theBreaking Baduniverse who gets introduced into theSaulplot gives the audience a special little jolt of excitement, and as the timelines of the two shows inch closer and closer (AMC recently announced the series has already beenrenewed for Season 5), more andmore of those revealsare bound to happen.
As for who may appear in the upcoming season the possibilities are virtually endless, but two characters you willnotsee is the dynamic duo of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Gilligan stated recently they will not appear in Season 4, but the likelihood of them appearing before the end of the series is high. One character will be revealed for certain: Lalo, a baddie who was mentioned fleetingly by Saul in an episode ofBreaking Bad, will make his debut and will be portrayed byTony Dalton(Sense8). So, who else could be seen in Season 4? Read on for some of the usual suspects.
Badger/Skinny Pete/Combo
Badger and Skinny Pete, Jesse’s slacker gang that couldn’t shoot straight – who are well known to indulge in the occasional controlled substance – would be prime targets to appear in the waiting room of Saul Goodman’s office once he gets his law license back, looking to get out of some shenanigans they’ve gotten themselves into. And since Combo has a close connection to a certain vehicle, we might also have a super fantastic RV cameo in store (sans bullet holes).
Hank and Marie Schraeder/Steve Gomez
Hank and Gomie are no-brainers. Since the tensions between Bolsa, Don Eladio, Hector and Gus are boiling over, it’s only a matter of time before Hank, Gomie, and the rest of the DEA make an appearance. And lest we forget, before Gus was outed as a drug dealer he was tight with the DEA, donating money, time, and lots of delicious poultry to the Albuquerque office. Will we see Gus, Hank, and Gomie at a community picnic, noshing on fried chicken and Schraederbrau? Confidence is high.
As for Marie, the purple lovin’, tiara stealing x-ray technician, we could have the origins of her kleptomania explored, as she goes to Saul for help getting out of a jam without Hank finding out.
The Juarez cartel drug runner turned snitch, portrayed byDanny Trejo(Machete), met a memorable end with his decapitated head taking one last ride on a tortoise filled with C4. His ties to Bolsa would be excellent fodder to give the audience a glimpse into the other side of the Hector/Gus turf war. Trejo has commented in the past about his desire to re-enter theBreaking Baduniverse, so this would seem like a perfect fit for the fan favorite.
Jane Margolis
Jane (Krysten Ritter), Jesse’s first girlfriend, had an extensive history of drug problems before she met her tragic end in Jesse’s bed. It is well within the realm of possibility to see her (and her Dad) reach out to Saul in hopes of making a deal with prosecutors to avoid jail time. Ritter’s starring role in the Netflix/Marvel hit showJessica Jonescould make an appearance unlikely, however.
Andrea/Tomas Cantillo
Andrea, Jesse’s second girlfriend, also met a nasty end (that seems to happen alotonBreaking Bad, no?), when she was shot to death by neo-Nazi drug dealers. She too had a history of addiction issues. The compelling hook here is her younger brother Tomas, who worked for Gus as a street-level drug dealer. He was also the person who shot and killed Jesse’s friend Combo as part of a gang initiation. It would be fascinating to explore how Tomas fell in with that crowd and what, if anything, Andrea did to try to stop it.
Mr. Herzog/Peter Schuler
Now that the rather twitchy Lydia Rodarte-Quayle from Madrigal Electromotive has been woven into theBetter Call Saultapestry, it opens up the opportunity to learn more about the worldwide corporation that helped fund and grow Gus Fring’s drug operations via his Los Pollos Hermanos restaurant chain. Mr. Herzog is the president of Madrigal, having been seen briefly only once in the parent series. That makes his participation unlikely, but the intriguing one here is Peter Schuler. As head of the fast food division, who you may remember better as the “dipping sauce guy,” he evaded capture by strapping himself to the business end of a defibrillator. Showing him working with Gus to build an illicit drug empire would be entertaining as hell.
