TheBoschuniverseisn’t just passing the baton — it’s changing the game. WithBallardpremiering July 9 on Prime Video,Maggie Qis stepping into the spotlight as LAPD cold case chief Renée Ballard, and she’s not here to play second fiddle to Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver). In fact, as Q told Collider during the show’s press day,Ballardhas to chart its own course to avoid getting lost in the shadow of what came before.

While Ballard and Bosch did team up during the final season ofBosch: Legacy, their dynamic was built on mutual respect — not mentorship. By the time Bosch tells her, “Maybe somewhere down the line we’ll get to work together again,” the writing was already on the wall — this wasn’t just a guest arc, it was a baton pass. But withBoschhaving become one of Prime Video’s longest-running andmost beloved crime dramas,Ballardwas never going to escape comparisons. For Q, that wasn’t something to fear — it was something to meet head-on.

“I didn’t set out to makeBosch. We’re 10 years past whenBoschstarted.”

Who Is ‘Ballard’ Based On?

Inspired by real-life LAPD detective Mitzi Roberts, Ballard is already familiar to fans ofMichael Connelly’snovels. But Q’s version brings new depth and nuance to a character navigating a different kind of terrain — literally and emotionally. Operating out of West L.A. andrunning a diverse cold case team, Ballard isn’t just closing files. This is a different police officer, tackling cases in her own way, even if Bosch’s shadow is lingering somewhere in the darkness. She’s fighting internal sexism, managing political pressure, and trying to do right by the victims — all while leading from the front.

“At the end of the day, she has to run a unit, and she’s not here to be people’s emotional support animals. When they’re doing something wrong, she has to tell them… So, as long as you can find the humanity in that and allow people the information that can inspire them to change those habits, I think you can have success. But it’s a very fine line.”

There’s no denyingBallardis born fromBosch. But as Maggie Q sees it, that’s just the beginning — not the boundary. “We’re standing on the shoulders of something great. But that doesn’t mean we can’t build something new,” said Q.
