If you caught Marvel’sAnt-Manin theaters - or happen to have your hands on a copy of the newly released Blu-ray - then you’ve probably already seen the post-credits scene. Those of you who checked out the recentCaptain America: Civil Wartrailer likely recognized that it led off in the same fashion thatAnt-Manended, namely with The Winter Soldier in the custody of Captain America and Falcon. But what exactly is the link between the two films?
In a new bonus featurette fromMarvel’s Phase Two Blu-ray box set,Kevin Feigenarrates some behind-the-scenes footage that explains howAnt-Man’spost-credits scene was selected, how wellPeyton Reed’sdirection matched up withJoe and Anthony Russo’sdirecting style forCaptain America: Civil War, and the decision to link the films up in this manner. It’s a nice peek behind the curtains at the brain trust that keeps the Marvel Cinematic Universe so cohesive.

Now this is speculation on my part, but it looks like this explains how Ant-Man ends up getting involved in the epic conflict between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. At this point in the movie, the Sokovia Accords seem to be in place already; the legislation requires the registration of super-powered folks and presumably recruits other super-humans, either heroes or villains, to track down those who refuse to register, whethertheyare heroes or villains. So the predicament is this: Cap and Falcon have Bucky in their custody, but aren’t exactly thrilled about turning him over to the government and their witch hunt. They think about asking Tony for help, so this must still be early enough in the game that they haven’t come to blows yet, but opt to do it themselves instead. Do what, exactly? I’m guessing that they’re trying to get their uniforms and equipment back, since you may see government officials taking it away from them in the trailer. Who better to help them liberate their gear than a miniature thief? We’ll see how this all plays out in May, but for now, let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
