Every once in a while, there comes a movie whose concept is so wild that you have to see it to believe it. 20 years ago, asci-fi comedycalledThe Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxydebuted in theaters, and it provided a different approach to stories that take place outside planet Earth. If you’ve either never watched it or completely forgotten about it, you will be glad to know that the Infinite Improbability Drive is directing the movie toHuluon July 1.
The characters ofThe Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxyare enough of a reason for you to want to check it out:Sam Rockwell(The White Lotus) plays a two-headed, three-armed alien who just wants to have fun in the middle of chaos. The lateAlan Rickman(Harry Potterfilm series) voiced a depressed robot, andMartin Freeman(The Hobbittrilogy) plays a grumpy British guy who is taken outside the planet just before it explodes. The cast also featuresZooey Deschanel(NewGirl),Yasiin Bey(Begin Again),John Malkovich(Opus),Helen Mirren(MobLand), and an unforgettable narration byStephen Fry(The Morning Show).

The storyis also incredibly inventive. In it, planet Earth is destroyed because it became an inconvenience toother alien races. In order to make room for a hyperspace express route, aliens decide to simply demolish it — luckily for Arthur Dent (Freeman), his friend Ford Prefect (Bey) is able to hitch a ride on a passing spaceship, and he becomes pretty much the only human in the entire universe aside from Trillian (Deschanel). And all of this is just the start of theintergalactic adventure.
Will There Ever Be a New ‘Hitchhiker’ Adventure?
Back in 2019, it was announcedthat Hulu was working on a TV series adaptationofThe Hitchhiker’s Guideto the Galaxy. At the time of the announcement, screenwritersCarlton Cuse(Lost) andJason Fuchs(Wonder Woman) were attached to helm the series. However, there have been no developments ever since, which makes us wonder if the project is dead in the water or if the movie’s addition to the library is the first indication that the series is finally gaining traction.
As any fan will tell you, there are endless possibilities for aHitchhiker’s GuideTV or even movie franchise. The story isbased on the novel seriesby British authorDouglas Adams— which, in turn, was based on a popular radio sitcom. The franchise has a history ofgoing through development hellbefore arriving on screens —despite the popularity of the novels, the movie only premiered 26 years after the first volume was published. Now, it’s already been 20 years since the movie debuted, which begs the question: will fans only getHitchhiker’s adaptations every two decades or more?

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxyarrives on the Hulu library on July 1.
